Politician's Salaries

Politicians in the UK don't get paid much as a base salary but because they're able to claim expenses in just about every little thing and because they cosy up to business, they get everything free or on the taxpayers money.

I think politicians should be given a salary of the (average UK wage + £10,000) as a base salary. Then £10,000 p/a for expenses which need to be documented and put on public display.

If salaries are at the UK average wage rate, then the better they do for the people, the better they do for themselves. Of course, the issue here is that all they'll do is lie about what the average salary in the UK is seeing as they probably own all the statistics in that field.

So instead, an independent body should dictate what the average is. The body should not be known by any politician and any politican found communicating in any way, directly or indirectly with a member of that body will face an enquiry.

To be honest, I really have no idea hows the best way to do it. I just think its dumb that they keep harping on that what they did was 'within the rules' but seeming to ignore the fact that THEY MAKE THE RULES.

What ozymandius says is right. Thats the problem with the "mean" of averages - the extreme highs will rise the average wage to levels that most people don't experience. For mathematical ways, I think the median wage is the true average wage - the extremes cancel each out roughly the same, due to the fact that the minimum wage means there isn't extreme "lows" but some can earn in excess of £1mill a year.

I think some expenses might be justified, maybe as a bonus that a lot of companies offer to good employees. But maybe a maximum of £2500 a year, + £5000 average wage to the MPs to stop this happening again?

They've got no need to lie about the average wage, since its heavily skewed towards the higher end by the ridiculous salaries of some. I suspect that's going to be becoming less of a factor over the next few years though.

Personally I think scrapping the expense system, and setting up a selection of government accomodation, maybe state-owned flats to be allocated to MPs when they are elected, and taken away afterwards might be a better way. Then you can simply get rid of a large chunk of the whole expense claim mess.
