Barack Obama

I think Barack Obama will be good for America.

I supported him throughout his nomination and was chuffed when he won. I think people's support for candidates like McCain and GWB was based on lies, misinformation and being fed misleading rhetoric from bullshit news organisations such as FOX.

Barack Obama to me shows a more measured person, and in turn, a more measured country. When the previous president says 'I'm a war president', to me, that isn't a cause for celebration or pride and if the UK prime minister said something like that, its likely the country would turn against him/her. I think that Obama knows that war isn't the answer and that peace cannot be found down the barrel of a gun, and even if it was - what is peace if hundreds of thousands of innocent people are dead?

One major aspect of Obama's policies that positively caught my attention was his support for moving troops from Iraq, into Afghanistan. Iraq was an unprovoked, illegal war - that many Americans STILL believe had something to do with 9/11. The terrorists were actually from Saudi Arabia but lets face it - all of US congress would murder their first borns before they invaded that country. Afghanistan and Pakistan is where the terrorists on that day are so it seems obvious to get out of Iraq and get back into the real retaliation.

Before I go on to talk more about Obama's policies, I have to also say why he was really the ONLY sensible choice anyway.

Hillary Clinton was and is a good and very clever candidate, but I judge politicians on how many 'interests' they have behind the scenes. I got the impression that Hillary was more involved with business, less open, less innovative and something about her just didn't ring well. I can imagine her going against the wishes of the country and the world far more easily than I could Obama. I also think Obama is more prepared to say 'No' to the puppeteers, the men behind the veil as it were.

John McCain was the wrong candidate for many reasons. First, practically, he was too old, simply too old. The idea that with age comes wisdom, is for the most part, a myth - and it certainly is with McCain. His foreign policy, in regards to Iraq and Iran were both negative. His obvious intention to invade Iran and his support for the Iraq war showed his disregard for the lives of others and his belief that the US has the right to do whatever it wants in the world, no matter how many innocent people die. His worldview is that the blood of people from the Middle East is worth less than that of the US. The hypocrisy of US policy in that entire region of the world is something that needs to change.
McCain's tax breaks for the rich too are not welcome or needed. There is a mentality in the US that if you are successful and have a lot of money, you have the right to stick your middle finger up to the rest of the world now that you've made it (no thought is given to HOW an individual became successful, perhaps polluting the Earth, damaging the health of consumers with shoddy produce, outsourcing jobs from the country). The concept of humanity, social responsibility and even charity seem to go out the window.
Republicans also seem to be terrified of rising taxes in the US. Few actually seem to look into what the taxes might be for and what it can bring, such as free healthcare for all.
In short, McCain stands for the continuing and increasing individualisation of the US whereas Obama stands for a more collectivist world, not 'communist/socialist' as some retard news organisations claimed (by UK standards, he is positively Conservative) but I think his tax plans will benefit the majority of Americans.
Finally, even though she wasn't a candidate for the presidency, I have to mention the airhead of the century, Sarah Palin. An insult to politics, intelligence, and women all over the world. Her knowledge of all contemporary political issues, showed a complete vacuum of information - even the ones she supposedly believed in. Not to mention the usual rubbish about the creation of the world, evolution and sex education. I thought it was funny and apt, that she believes so much in abstinence only education, and yet Bristol Palin, her daughter 17 years old got pregnant, and unmarried. You might think, given the circumstances, that she would alter her opinions on responsibility in sex education - but obviously not. Not that this isn't a recurring theme for vice presidents, Dick Cheney's daughter is a lesbian, woops! Very much a case of do as I say, not as I do.

Ok, now that that bits out of the way, we can concentrate on Obama again.
Let me say that at times during Obama's nomination and subsequent ascension to presidency, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the US was electing the messiah but I don't blame them for being excited. Obama is more moderate on social issues as well as economic and foreign.
On Abortion, he has voted in support of giving $100M for a drive to reduce teen pregnancy through education about contraceptives and recently gave funding to organisations that practice safe abortions outside the US. Prohibiting abortions is not a viable option. I'm not saying that abortion is a good thing, but it is necessary sometimes.
He is against the discrimination of homosexuals and supports civil unions.
Another thing I'm happy about is his support for better care for the environment, an issue that was almost wholly ignored by his predecessor. He wants to invest in green technologies and I hope that proves to be a positive thing for the environment.

There's tons more I can write but this has taken me ages so I'll save it for the moment as it is.
