Organ Donation

There was recently a bill proposed in the UK for presumed consent of donation of organs.

My opinion is that this is a great idea.

Some people complain that this is some authoritarian decision made for you when in fact it really isn't. Presumed consent also involves the right for you to withdraw your consent at any time for any reason.
There has also been religious bullshit about how taking organs from a body is somehow an affront to the Lord. Well, as anybody who has taken even the most fleeting glance at medical history knows, religion, Christianity in particular has held back medical science by centuries so...what do they know.

Another criticism is that doctors may allow people die in order to take their organs when they may have otherwise survived. Well, for one, doctors don't know that someone is an organ donor until after they're dead. And if they do, its not as if anybody on the organ donor register who goes into hospital ends up killed by doctors. Just as many walk out alive as those that aren't.

When you're dead, EVEN if you believe in an afterlife, you still don't need your organs, why not give them to someone else and save their life? (Isn't that an honourable deed that might get you into heaven?)
In my view, its only a winning situation, there are no losers - you're dead and were going to die anyway so you might as well give them away.

I'm on the Organ Donation register and feel that even if I achieve nothing in my life and its the most utterly pointless waste of time ever - at least the very fact I existed on this Earth meant that other people were given the chance to live.

I would advise anybody in the UK (or elsewhere) who isn't on the organ donation register to sign up now, it only takes a few minutes, they send you a lovely little card. Its worth it.
