Advertising to Minors

Quite simply, I think all advertising to children under the age of 13 should be cut down by 90%, they should be shown ONLY during the times when children's TV is on.

I'd say 13 was a reasonable age. Before that point, however, the children do not have a disposable income, they're not really aware of the value of money.

Advertising creates desire for products - Desire for products creates materialism - Materialism creates an ugly world.

Advertisements aimed at children aren't just slapped together, they're created not just by a production team - but also by psychologists, people who want to make sure the child wants that product, delving into their mind psychologically to achieve it.
In my opinion, that kind of conduct aimed at children is unacceptable. Children should not be considered consumers for products costing more than $20.

Companies know that children do not have the money to buy expensive products. How do they get the products of the shelves? Nag-Power, that right, the power of nagging isn't something I just made up, look up any advertising model aimed at children and the concept of 'nagging' is there as a way to make money.
Adverts are saying: "Look at this cool, amazing product which makes you cool!, ask your parents for it now!!". Then the next one will say the same thing, and the next and the next. I don't believe children should be dragged into the materialism of capitalism while they're young.

Anyone knows that a ball can be just as much fun for an hour as the latest games console costing $400. Children need to grow up knowing this.

I'd disagree that materialism creates an ugly world by default. An ugly world is created when demand is artificially inflated above supply, if on the other hand there's enough of everything to go around then there's no problem.

As a graphic designer, I am aware of the psychological impact of advertising.

However, banning advertisements aimed at children would be a difficult undertaking, especially in a capialist economy.

I agree vehemently with the principal of stopping those sorts of psychological operations on children though.
