Dealing with Criminals
I am against the Death Penalty in just about every case I can think of.
For petty crime like grafitti or general hooliganism - they should be lead for a mile through the streets preferably wearing absolutely nothing but a blindfold and a pair of shoes. A little bit of not mental pain will make minor idiots think twice about spray painting that wall or harassing that person on a bus.
As well as this, community service should be compulsory for all criminals, no matter what the crime is. I'm against the Death Penalty but I think forcing people to work until they die is not only useful to society as free labour - but is probably a fate worse than death.
The point is that criminals need to be humiliated while they serve their time. They should wear uniforms that distinguish them from everybody else so while people walk around and do their shopping, they can look over at the hooligans chained by their feet repainting a wall or something. I think it'd be a strong lesson to children 'you do not want to be in their position'.
Working should be important to the life of a criminal. If they refuse to work for a day they get a third of a day added to their overall sentence, if they choose to work, a third of a day is removed. Over the course of years they could really add up against or in favour of a criminal.
Not only that, criminals should be made to work constantly. So from 7am to 7pm you have some criminals working outside, and the rest sleeping in their cells. From 7pm to 7am, they swap around and the ones who were working can sleep and vice versa. It could work and also sorts out a massive problem of prison overcrowding.
I do also believe in 'the stocks' yes, call me medeival. The criminals would not be able to see so there was no chance of reprisals and people could pay £5 for 5 tomatoes to throw, the proceeds of which go towards community funding.
Not only that, but criminals over the age of 25 should have their job hisotry checked.
If they left school at 16 they should have worked at least 30% of the time
If they left school at 18 they should have worked 25% of the time.
If they finished university with a degree they are exempt from this.
For the first two though, if a person is found, with no real reason to have worked for less than the time stated above, they should not be allowed to leave prison until they gain a qualification in some form of labour.
There should also be a form of 'honour' reinstated. For example, commit too many crimes and you will go down officially on all records as a 'disgrace' and it'd even be written on your gravestone. If you're ever referred to, you'd be 'The Disgrace, Joe Bloggs'. However, change your ways and you could be exonorated. I don't think I've come up with an amazing example but something along those lines.
Feel free to call me harsh.

I know prisoners here in the US used to be sent out in work gangs on a regular basis, but I don't think it's common anymore, which I think is a pity. Prisoners should work.
Bring back the stocks? Maybe. That would certainly be a deterrent to me!

Maybe its just my personal outlook on life but even if someone in my family or friend group were murdered, I wouldn't want the person that did it killed.
And maybe you're right about the scuzzballs - I'm talking more about politicians (the Hamiltons, any other people found to be corrupt etc) or pricks like Piers Morgan (just because I hate him

Why no death penalty? Some criminals, particularly those who seek to promote their own cause or interest through causing the death of others have already established that they believe killing other people is perfectly acceptable.
