There are many jobs which are important, require high degrees of training, but which do not save lives. Where's the incentive for those?

What about night-shift workers? They have to work unpleasant, anti-social hours. Why would anyone do this if they cannot get some sort of reward in return? Yes, there are a few people who prefer to work at night, but not many.

Undesirable and hard jobs attract people because of the greater rewards that they offer. Take those away, and no one will want the job.

Yes, I gave the best example of a job that deserves more compensation than other jobs -- an oil boat captain.

If you have to be off-shore, away from your home, wife, and children for 4 to 6 weeks at a time... you need to be compensated!!! Nobody would go out there for 30k per year if they could stay here and do clerical work instead for that same 30k per year. I know an oil boat captain, and he gets paid more than 100k per year... and ya know what?!? He deserves it!

As for your second comment about every government becoming corrupt, that is true. It comes from the concentration of power. In a communist government, the concentration of power is a few guys in the state. In a capitalist government, the concentration of power are the owners of corporations, who project their shadows into our government.

All governments have this concentration of power except for libertarian-socialism! That is when there is direct democracy among all active and eligible participants. If the people want universal health insurance... they get it without the corporations paying off 43 uneducated and selfish Senators. Libertarian-socialism requires a platform of some sort that essentially provides checks and bounds for itself, like TCP/IP does for the Internet. The Internet is open for all, but there's still some rules to abide by... and security comes at each individual end-point, where it's supposed to be. The Internet is completely stable, even tho it's anarchist in nature... and things are advancing ever more quickly with the spread of the Internet than ever before. I want our Gov't to be the same way, embracing new technologies and allowing more participation from citizens across the board. We can get rid of concentrations of power in the very near future if people realize all the power that certain technologies can provide for all of us. If other people think you're hot shiz, then people will give you respect... and that is where true authority should derive from -- respect. Being born into a wealthy family, marrying into a wealthy family, getting lucky at the casinos, etc. do not equal true authority, therefore... those types of people shouldn't [necessarily] be telling others what to do. But if they manage to be filthy rich and care to get their hands dirty in certain issues and want to help solve problems... then yes, they deserve the authority that most rich folks don't deserve.

P.S. - Have you guys ever heard of http://www.govtrack.us/ ??? It's an open source project to track our federal government. It's exactly the type of thing I was imagining in talking about Democracy 2.0 etc... except it's still missing the forum with rating capabilities! Mix www.GovTrack.us with FatWallet.com's rating system (-10 to +10) for each and every bill and each and every comment about those bills... and then we'll get to Democracy 2.0. Wink
